20/20 Vision

Are you seeing clearly?

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

1 Corinthians 13:12

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to attend and complete a “rope rescue class” with the Gulfport Fire Department. God used it in a mighty way to show me an illustration that I’d like to share with you this morning.

As we began the class the bare necessities of this class were tying knots with the rope they gave us. For the first couple of days the instructors showed us how to tie a specific knot and set us out on mastering that knot. God used something heavily that week to speak to my heart on how we view things. One of those mornings the instructor told us to tie a butterfly knot which was one of the many knots that we learned that week. As we tied them we held them out high and proud as they passed through the ranks inspecting them. He paced through and passed by me and about 3 knots down stopped and informed the student that his knot was not tied correctly. The student was not only shocked but adamant that it was tied correctly. The student and the instructor went back and forth a few times about how the knot was tied and what it’s functions were and how it was supposed to look and the student was still persistent that his knot was tied correctly. It wasn’t until the instructor took the rope out of the student’s hand that within an instant and once his view of the knot had changed, that the student said, “Oh! That’s wrong!”, to the degree that you’d have thought it was his idea in the first place. It was pretty humorous. The instructor said, “I know, that’s what I’ve been trying to tell you for the last 3 minutes!”.

Have you ever been in that place where you were absolutely sure that you were right about something and once you could see it a little differently you instantly noticed that you were wrong about it? Sometimes things need to be taken out of our hands so that we can get a different angle on it and can properly see it for what it truly is. Sometimes God has to take things out of our hands and show us yet again the proper way in which things must be done. Only God can see all things as they truly are. The student didn’t fail the class because of that and as a matter of fact the student could tie a butterfly knot better than the most of us after that happened because of it! Get it out of your hands and get it in to God’s hands! Stop and ask yourself today, the things that are bothering you most, are you seeing them clearly?
