And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”
Paul tells us “above all” put on love. This is the characteristic by which a Christian should be known above all else. How are you known by others? Are you theologically sound? A good speaker? An active member of the church? An involved member of the community? Maybe people know you for the gifts you have. Maybe you are known as a person with a beautiful voice, or as one who is a talented craftsman, or a person of uncommon wisdom, or one who has experienced God’s power in spectacular ways. But the Lord asks: “But do you love?” Jesus said this is how the world will know you are MY disciples- “by your love”. Jesus also said when asked what was the greatest commandment, he replied “ to love God with all your soul, heart, and mind and the second is like unto it, love thy neighbor as thyself.” Whats love got to do with it? Everything!!!!
I think it is easily established that love is supposed to be the predominant characteristic of Christians. Unfortunately, in practice love is often absent. Notice, that Paul tells us to “put on” love. It is something we are required to DO. It is something we must practice. But it is God’s armor and not our own that we put on. The only love that will bring a bond of peace and a perfection of unity is God’s love. It is impossible for any of us to love this way within ourselves. We can only love God because He first loves us and we can only love others when we first love Him. Love cannot be taught or acquired through study – nor can it be worked up in our emotions or rooted in any romantic feelings. Godly love flows into our very being from the God of love Himself – and that same love of Christ is poured out from us into the lives of others. It is the Holy Ghost that sheds the love of God abroad in our hearts. (Romans 5:5) If we be risen with Christ and Christ is All and in All (v11), then ABOVE ALL- put on love! Dear Christian, it is high time to awaken out of our sleep and put on the armor of light. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and bring glory to our Father
